More and more purchases are made online in Benin, and Mobile Money (MTN or Moov) is today the most widely used payment method for it. Here's how it actually works, along with a few tips for recognizing a trustworthy site before you pay.

How an online Mobile Money payment works

In practice, you enter your phone number on the site, confirm your order, and then receive a notification (a "push") directly on your phone. You simply confirm it with your usual Mobile Money PIN, exactly like a regular money transfer. No banking information is ever requested on the site itself.

How long does confirmation take

Usually a few seconds to a few minutes. If the push doesn't arrive immediately, first check that your phone has a good network signal, and wait a bit before trying again — mobile networks can sometimes have a slight delay during peak hours.

How to recognize a trustworthy site before paying

A few simple signs: the site's address starts with "https://" (with a padlock in the address bar), the site clearly presents its terms of service and privacy policy, and above all, it never asks for your Mobile Money PIN directly on a web page — that code is only entered on your phone, within your operator's app or USSD menu.

What to do if a payment seems stuck

If you confirmed the push but the page remains stuck on "pending" for more than a few minutes, avoid starting a new transaction right away (to avoid the risk of being charged twice). Instead, contact the site's customer support with your order reference — they'll be able to check the real status with the payment gateway.
